COMMUNITY WILDFIRE PROTECTION PLAN
The Town of Washington is designated as a community at high risk for wildfire due to the flammable vegetation of the area, housing density, and risk of wildfire occurrence.
In 2016, the Town chose to participate in the creation of a Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP), a comprehensive 5-year plan for fire-prone communities created at the town level that identifies how the Town will reduce its risk from wildland fires. The plan was adopted March 6, 2017. In 2022, the CWPP was refreshed and adopted on September 12, 2022. The plan spans 2023-2027.
The intent of the plan is to help Town of Washington property owners, Town of Washington representatives, fire protection agencies, and natural resource professionals to be better prepared to protect lives, property and natural resources against the negative impacts of wildfire.
The CWPP was collaboratively developed by a core team of Town, WDNR and USFS representatives, and the Eagle River Area Fire Department. It addresses issues such as wildfire response, hazardous fuels reduction, community preparedness and structure protection.
The CWPP is funded by a U.S. Forest Service State and Private Forestry grant at no cost to the Town of Washington.
